Ever wonder of the history of Crayola crayons? The name of Crayola was created by Alice Stead Binney, wife of Edwin Binney. She took the French words "craie" meaning chalk, "ola" for "oleaginous" or "oily".
Binney and Smith first introducted Crayola crayons in 1885. In the beginning of 1903 there was only eight colors offered. The eight colors were black, blue, brown, green, orange, red, violet, and yellow. The company was found in New York City, New York by Edwin Binney and C. harold Smith. Crayola was originally a industrial pigment supply company but soon turned its focus to products for the home and school use. First introduced was chalk then crayons. Colored pencils, markers, paints, and everything else was introduced later on.
